Rocky Point Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend - Rocky Point

Labor Day Weekend, September 2nd thru 4th, 2016.

Rocky Point Labor Day Weekend Castaways

Labor Day is observed in the U.S. on every first Monday in September as a day to recognize the contributions of American workers of all industries to the U.S. economy. It is also meant to give workers a well-earned day off to relax at home or to get out for recreation.

To many, Labor Day marks the end of the summer season, even as Memorial Day marks its beginning. Many see Labor Day as their last chance to get out and take a vacation before summer is gone, and many workers get a two-week annual vacation period with Labor Day Weekend right in the middle of the two weeks off.

Most U.S. schools restart classes, after the long summer break, about a week before Labor Day. Others schools, however, resume classes on the day after Labor Day, thus allowing families to get in their last taste of summer before the school yea gets underway.

About Labor Day

The first Labor Day was held in 1882. Its origins stem from the desire of the Central Labor Union to create a holiday for workers. It became a federal holiday in 1894. It was originally intended that the day would be filled with a street parade to allow the public to appreciate the work of the trade and labor organizations. After the parade, a festival was to be held to amuse local workers and their families. In later years, prominent men and women held speeches. This is less common now, but is sometimes seen in election years. One of the reasons for choosing to celebrate this on the first Monday in September was to add a holiday in the long gap between Independence Day and Thanksgiving.

Memorial Day in Rocky Point

Memorial Day, 2016.

Memorial Day, May 27th, 2016.

Memorial Day 2016 Rocky Point

Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the la Monday of May, honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries of memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

Memorial Day 2016 Rocky Point

It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated; numerous different communities may have independently initiated the memorial gatherings. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo-which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866-was chosen because it hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

Memorial Day traditions

Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organizations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York and Washington, D.C. Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries and memorials. On a less somber note, many people throw parties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because it unofficially marks the beginning of summer.

It is customary to mark the day by visiting graveyard and war monuments. One of the biggest Memorial Day traditions is for the President or Vice President to give a speech and lay a wreath on soldiers’ graves in the largest national cemetery, Arlington National Cemetery, in Virginia. Most towns have local Memorial Day celebrations. Here are some ways you can honor the men and women who serve our country:

  • Put flags of flowers on the graves of men and women who served in wars.
  • Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon.
  • Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and marines.
  • Participate in National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time.
  • March in a parade.

5th International Jazz Day Celebration

Rocky Point Jazz Festival – 5th International Jazz Day set for April 22 & 23

Rocky Point Jazz Festival, April 22 & 23.

Rocky Point Jazz Festival

In 2002, the Smithsonian Institute determined April as Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), and then in November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated April 30th as International Jazz Day.

Jazz was born in the US and traveled the world as a music of tolerance, freedom and human dignity. This is why UNESCO created International Jazz Day. This event reminds us Jazz is more than music.

This year the 5th International Jazz Day will be celebrated at  Malecon Fundadores. Headlining the event will be Nayo Jones, along with Carlos Rivas and his Mex-Sal orchestra, among other local and international artists. So let’s unite, communicate, and enjoy some beach diplomacy by taking in festivities to honor International Jazz Day right here in Puerto Peñasco with two nights of jamming under the stars, April 22nd and 23rd.
